Blasphemy Against the Holy Ghost
What is Blasphemy of the Holy Ghost?
Can A Christian Commit it today?
Blasphemy of the Holy Ghost is bandied around these days more and more to keep Christians from questioning or coming against the teachings of leaders. It is used to keep believers quiet for the fear of losing salvation effectively stopping us from checking what is being taught.
But what in reality is, “The Blasphemy of the Holy Ghost” And “Can we commit this unforgivable sin and lose salvation?”
Before we go any further let us look, in context, at what is actually said in Matthew.
Mat 12:22 Then was brought unto him one possessed with a devil, blind, and dumb: and he healed him, insomuch that the blind and dumb both spake and saw.
Mat 12:23 And all the people were amazed, and said, Is not this the son of David?
Mat 12:24 But when the Pharisees heard it, they said, This fellow doth not cast out devils, but by Beelzebub the prince of the devils.
Mat 12:25 And Jesus knew their thoughts, and said unto them, Every kingdom divided against itself is brought to desolation; and every city or house divided against itself shall not stand:
Mat 12:26 And if Satan cast out Satan, he is divided against himself; how shall then his kingdom stand?
Mat 12:27 And if I by Beelzebub cast out devils, by whom do your children cast them out? therefore they shall be your judges.
Mat 12:28 But if I cast out devils by the Spirit of God, then the kingdom of God is come unto you.
Mat 12:29 Or else how can one enter into a strong man’s house, and spoil his goods, except he first bind the strong man? and then he will spoil his house.
Mat 12:30 He that is not with me is against me, and he that gathereth not with me scattereth abroad.
Mat 12:31 Wherefore I say unto you, All manner of sin and blasphemy shall be forgiven unto men: but THE blasphemy against the Holy Ghost shall not be forgiven unto men.
Mat 12:32 And whosoever speaketh a word against the Son of man, it shall be forgiven him: but whosoever speaketh against the Holy Ghost, it shall not be forgiven him, neither in this world, neither in the world to come.
There are many interpretations of these Scriptures, focusing primarily on verses 31-32. Many teach that it is to reject Christ again once you have been saved and thus you are blaspheming the Spirit and this is the unforgivable sin.
Others teach that it is coming against a new move of God by His Spirit, thus rejecting the truth, therefore you cannot be forgiven. Many of these moves? of God are such things as:
Toronto Blessing
Gold Fillings
Holy Laugher movement
And any other experience-based teaching today
The clue to understanding this Scripture is written earlier in verse 22 – the Pharisees accused the Messiah of casting out demons in the name of the Devil. This is THE Blasphemy of the Holy Ghost (a specific sin at a specific time). Accusing Jesus to His face of being in league with Satan or of being possessed by a demon. This was an unforgivable sin, and it was pronounced to these people at this time only.
It was an accusation made by those who were a part of God’s chosen people but rejected Him as both Messiah and a righteous man.
Can we today as Born Again believers turn to the Messiah and accuse Him of doing things in the name of Satan? No, I can not envisage any circumstance which would bring this about. The Messiah is not walking among us physically casting out demons with us as witnesses that we could accuse Him so.
What has in fact happened is that the roots of the faith have yet again been rejected by ignoring the fact that Jesus was talking to the Pharisees at this point and they were the rejecting Jews performing this Unforgivable act. Jesus was not talking to believers when making this accusation but to unbelievers.
Satan however is more than happy to promote this Scripture in the church to keep believers from questioning the lies he is infiltrating with. After all, who wants to commit an unforgivable sin and lose their salvation? What fear and bondage this places us under. If we are afraid to question we have to accept all we are told. This is a dangerous position to be placed into when so much deception is abounding today.
God promises that He will never leave us nor forsake us. Never means ever once we are in a relationship with Him. We may backslide from time to time and even on occasion turn our back on Him. That does not mean He will turn His back on us. Never means never. Look how hard Jonah tried to run and hide from God. He turned his back on God yet God did not let him go. “I will never leave you nor forsake you,” says our Lord.
There is however one sin that is unforgivable today. It is not the Blasphemy of the Holy Ghost, but not believing in Jesus Christ for our salvation. Jesus died for all our sins both past, present, and future. We know this is true as all our sins are future from the time Jesus died and rose again.
So we can see that in reality we are only actually condemned to eternal punishment because of one sin. For unbelievers, all sins are punishable because of the rejection of Jesus. For the believer, God chooses to forget our sins. He separates them as far as the East is from the West and we are no longer judged by our sins but rewarded for our achievements in God’s kingdom as enacted through us on earth. Laying up our treasures in Heaven.
Blasphemy of the Holy Ghost cannot happen today. The only unforgivable sin today is:
John 3:3:
Jesus answered and said unto him, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God.
